OUR STORY

We understand the value of strong communities and healthy natural environments. Our experiences as architects have led us to advocate for the thoughtful planning and design of delightful spaces that care for both. In 2010, VIA was born as a new kind of architecture practice. We officially incorporated in 2011.

We call ourselves Vermont Integrated Architecture, or VIA, because we work with our clients, consultants, and other project stakeholders to find a better way (‘VIA’) to conceive of buildings and their surroundings. We take pride in our Vermont-ness, and we believe our work is not about us, but our clients and the many other people who contribute to its design and development, hence an Integrated process. We have intentionally grown our firm to be a collaborative and a laboratory for the advancement of Architecture that is timeless, yet reflective of its place. All of these values are rooted in our commitment to sustainability.

Since our founding, we have expanded our team to include individuals who share our values and add to our collective wisdom, with exceptional skill in sustainable design and carbon reduction, building construction means and methods, design of well-loved, enduring spaces, and many more specific disciplines. In 2023, Megan Nedzinski joined Andrea Murray and Ashar Nelson as a partner. As of January 1, 2024, VIA expanded to include Maclay Architects, a nationally recognized leader in the field of sustainability, as a part of the firm. We are now in two locations – our home office in Middlebury and the Maclay Studio in Waitsfield – with Bill Maclay participating as advisor and Principal Emeritus to the firm.

In the midst of global social and environmental challenges, we take very seriously our ability and our obligation to effect positive change. We are committed to designing new buildings and upgrading existing buildings to the highest levels of sustainability, healthfulness, energy efficiency, durability, flexibility, and inclusion. We continually challenge ourselves, our clients, and our communities to recognize our interdependence and do better for all living things inhabiting our planet now and for generations to come.
