SLOPE HOUSE

Central VT

This modern home sits on a corner lot with stunning views of Mad River Glen to the south and southwest. The 15% south-facing slope offers perfect passive solar exposure; the sloping roof of the home contrasts with the slope of the hill for greatest solar gain. With a guest room, home office, workout space, and storage space located in the walkout lower level, the main level features cathedral ceilings throughout. Large windows in the main living space frame the views to the southwest, while the wide stair corridor to the east invites morning light to bounce deep into the home year-round. Two heat pumps – single head on main level and mini-ducted on lower level – heat and cool the home, while a Zehnder Energy Recovery Ventilator ensures indoor air quality. A heat pump hot water heater exhausts cold air into the storage space or the open basement depending on the season.
