MAD RIVER GLEN BASEBOX AND PATROL BUILDING
Fayston, VT
Facing a need to address various accessibility and life safety issues in its base area buildings, the shareholders at the iconic Mad River Glen ski area saw an opportunity to improve the buildings’ operational and energy efficiency as well. With careful attention to its history and unique charm, VIA designed improvements to the Basebox including mechanical and structural upgrades, an elevator and new stairways, and a complete renovation of the kitchen area for improved safety and efficiency. A more open floorplan offers greater flexibility for in-season functionality and expands opportunities for off-season use. Part of Efficiency Vermont’s deep energy retrofit program, the renovation targeted a 40-50% reduction in energy use. In addition, low-carbon insulation and regional lumber for siding help mitigate the project’s carbon impact. The Mad River Glen Co-op chose to completely replace the patrol building to provide more functional space for patient care, storage, and patrol staff and ski school instructors within a sound, high performance building. Both buildings were functional by the beginning of the 2020 ski season.
