BRANDON FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY – 1830s
Brandon, VT
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1830 federal style gable front building, which is now home to the Brandon Free Public Library, was originally the site of a furniture manufacturer and a millinery. The library moved to the building in 1907 and library trustees purchased and donated the building to the BFPL in 1910. The building sits prominently in the center of Brandon and contributes to the historic fabric of the downtown area. This 2024 major renovation and restoration improves accessibility, upgrades life safety systems, and creates a functional, flexible home for the library for years to come. Where possible, we preserved historic interior components including windows, wood flooring, shelving, and tin ceilings. On the exterior, brick facades and historic loading doors help preserve the building’s historic character, as will future full restoration of ironwork on the west façade and the queen post truss structural system in the attic.
