WATERBURY MUNICIPAL CENTER

Waterbury, VT

In late 2013, VIA began developing a design for a new library and municipal office complex for the town of Waterbury, whose town office was displaced by Tropical Storm Irene. The new facility connects a fully renovated and restored historic Dr. Janes House, home of the Historical Society, with a new net-zero energy ready building housing the library, town offices, and public meeting space. A robust community process generated enthusiastic support for the project and its energy goals. The project was part of Efficiency Vermont’s pilot Commercial Net-Zero program, designed to understand the advantages and complications of net-zero energy design in commercial applications. Designed for long-term durability and flexibility, the building is poised to serve the Waterbury community for decades to come.

“I was very impressed with VIA’s responsiveness. In the early stages of the design process, VIA offered a design that our staff felt would not work well for us. We shared our concerns and were delighted that VIA partners heard us and returned to the next meeting with changes to address our concerns. We were consulted and heard at each step of the process.”
