Middlebury College Solar Decathlon | 2011-2013
Ashar and Andrea acted as faculty advisors to the 2013 Solar Decathlon Team from Middlebury College – guiding the design and construction of an award-winning net-zero home called InSite. The house was publicly displayed at the competition site in Irvine, CA, and currently resides on campus in Middlebury, VT where it serves as a student residence and plays host to hundreds of visitors to the College. InSite represents the College’s lofty commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, while simultaneously giving back to its neighborhood via educational programming. The house features local materials, close integration with the landscape, highly efficient mechanical systems, and advanced building envelopes in sub-1,000 SF footprints. InSite performed admirably at the competition, winning third place in Communications, third place in Affordability, first place in Energy Balance, with a top-ten finish in the overall competition.
