Helen Porter Memory Garden

Middlebury, VT | 2014

VIA is currently in the design development stages of a courtyard for the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. The project involves designing a multi-sensory experience which meets the comfort and safety needs of advanced Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. A Munstead Lavender embedded rock garden is designed to draw butterflies, while the adjacent high bush blueberries permeated with feeders will attract birds. Unique ‘roll-in raised beds’ would provide a more interactive gardening opportunity to residents in wheelchair and Geri chairs. A detached screen porch structure integrated into the fence and a pergola off a birdhouse garden would offer varying levels of sun and shade for the residents and visiting family members. VIA has been humbled by the Helen Porter staff’s dedication and compassion throughout the collaborative design development process.
